Railroad spikes are used extensively in conjure to protect the home, specifically from eviction and/or certain cases, foreclosure. It is uncommon for authentic conjure workers to use shiny, new spikes for these as rusted spikes hold the most spiritual value. These spikes are well rusted and can be used in workings where you need to symbolically nail yourself down.

To nail down your property and ward off eviction, it is said you should take four Railroad Spikes dressed with a condition oil, such as Law Repellant or Pillar of Fire, and nail them into the four corners of your property. Should you live in an apartment, four potted plants in the corner of your abode with railroad spikes buried beneath will be just as effective.
